Chapter 5

Jake led the others deeper into the forest. They had left the minivan in an empty parking lot and headed out on foot toward the Cavern of Light. He held out a hand to stop them. Everyone knew better than to ask what was wrong because that would impede his ability to hear whatever he was listening for. He looked at Buddy, and with both hands Jake pulled off his own shirt. Buddy nodded. Seconds later Jake was a werewolf and Buddy was collecting his clothes. Bjorn looked over at him with a questioning look. Again Buddy nodded, but this time Abby understood what was going on. She picked up the clothes on the ground beside her and took Jake’s clothing from Buddy. She wanted more than anything to turn, but knew that none of them was going to allow her to go running off alone.

Bjorn sprinted through the woods and quickly caught up with Jake. He pointed his muzzle to the right then left. Jake understood and they split up heading in different directions around a clearing. Standing in the middle of it were five of the undead, swaying gently in the breeze almost like scarecrows. Bjorn looked for the eyes of his companion before heading for them. A low howl let him know which direction to expect Jake, so Bjorn set his eyes on the one closest to the other three and let out a low growl.

The two darted out from either side of the clearing, paws pounding the ground as they made their way toward the swaying figures.

With staggering steps each of the creatures turned to look, and for the first two it was already too late to react. As if echoing each other, Bjorn and Jake growled as they sprang and smashed the heads of the first two undead against the ground with their paws. Bjorn turned and began racing back to the next closest, certain that the closest threat had been neutralized. Jake was already taking down his second of the undead. Bjorn closed in on his second target and quickly dispatched it. When he turned, thinking he would see Jake finishing off the final creature, Bjorn’s blood froze. Jake had transformed and was looking at the fifth undead with wide eyes, his head shaking back and forth as if to deny what he saw. The creature was closing in with outstretched hands. Bjorn knew there were only seconds before Jake was torn to shreds.

Bjorn barked several times to distract the creature, just enough to give Jake time to back away. Transforming as he ran, Bjorn called out, “Jake, back away.”

“It’s… She’s…”

“She’s not that person anymore, she isn’t alive. If she is left to roam, she will only harm others! It’s what the undead do!”

Jake’s mouth opened and closed as he watched the woman turn toward Bjorn. Aware that this was someone important to Jake, Bjorn turned back into a wolf and knocked the woman onto her back. He raced off into the woods and returned seconds later carrying several long sticks.
